In a four passenger car, should I install a child safety seat behind the driver or the passenger?

My back seat doesn’t allow me to install a child safety seat in the middle. Is it safer to install behind the driver’s seat or the passenger’s?

Best Answer: Behind the PASSENGER seat so you take time to put the baby in the seat front the curb and see the seat in the mirror.

I’d put it behind the passengers seat. That way you can sneak a peek over your shoulder to check on the little one :) Another reason may be that when driving on a two lane road the seat is farthest away from the oncoming traffic?!

If you must have it in the rear put it on the passenger side.

You don’t say what age group you are looking at but if it is a very young baby, you may want to consider using a seat where the baby is actually facing backwards relative to the car and installing it on the front passenger seat. There are seats available that enable this. The good thing is that if you should have to stop very quickly or heaven forbid have an accident, the babies head will simply be pushed back against the seat back and supported. Additionally the air bags will deploy and simply press against the rear of the seat thus stopping it moving too far and also will not hit the bay in the face etc. If the seat (and baby) are facing forwards during a very quick stop there is a danger that the babies head will be thrown forward an severe “whiplash” injuries can occur to the babies neck. If the seat is in the front airbags could deploy and hit the baby in the face but obviously in the rear there is only the danger of whiplash.
By installing this sort of seat on the front passenger seat, you can easily see what the baby is doing and the baby can see you as well. The point about loading the baby from the pavement or nearside is good and also applies with this type of seat.

These seats are readily available here in the Uk and you maywant to look at the attached link.

I hope that this helps and maybe gives you a different view on fitting baby seats. Whatever, take care of yourself and yours.

John: You are an idiot! You are NOT to install rear facing child seats in the front seat, EVER! It says this in the car manual, on the visor, and on the car seat. Babies can be killed. Poster, the best place is in the middle but since that is not possible I would go with the passenger side.
