Is there a test to determine whether you have had the H1N1 (swine flu) virus?

Several people in my office have recently been sick. One person now has a confirmed H1N1 diagnosis. I was sick two weeks ago and did not even suspect it was H1N1. I still somewhat doubt that it was, but is there any way to test retroactively whether I had it, e.g. through the presence of antibodies?

The “cheap” test would only show whether or not you had an active infection of swine flu. While it is certainly possible to tell whether you’ve been infected in the past – considering the overload on the health system already I seriously doubt you would find a doctor who would deem it necessary.

Chances are it WAS swine flu you had a few weeks ago – the LARGE majority of people who have it don’t even know because the symptoms are much more mild than even the “normal” seasonal flu…

So, in short, the answer is yes – it IS possible to tell – but it would be expensive and probably not covered under any kind of insurance plan since it’s pretty much a moot point now…
