My Sister is 11, she’s starting Chemotherapy on Monday, its a really scary time for us all and I was wondering if someone could clear it up a little?
I know how Chemotherapy works, but what are the short term and long term side affects from this treatment? It will take 3 months to complete.
Thank you.

The biggest and most common side effect with chemo is nausea and vomiting and as a result weight loss occus. Her doctors should prescribe her some anti-emetics if she experiences these symtoms. They will help decrease her nausea and as a result she should have a better appetite. Nutrition is an important factor in a person’s health and healing.
Fatigue is probably the one side effect that no one can escape. Followed by vomiting and naseua.
Side effects are very different from one person to the next. But they have made great advancements in medicine as far as helping with the side effects. Make sure your parents talk the doctors about geting her whatever she may need. There is no reason an 11 year old should have to suffer, they can get her some great anti-naseua drugs.
Good luck! I wish you the best.. what type of cancer does she have by the way?
The most common is hair loss as well as fatigue. There are so many types of chemo so no one can really tell you just what your sister will be going through except what cancer survivors themselves have experienced. But our experiences may not be hers. It all depends on her type of chemo and the type of cancer she has. She will get medication for nausea and vomiting but now they also have chemo that will not cause the nausea and vomiting. She will be in a fragile state. She won’t want to do anything just because of the fatigue. Just be there for her. She’s going to need you a lot. Give her all the love and support you can muster because you love her already. I pray this chemo gets rid of her cancer. She will be in my prayers. God bless both of you. That’s a tough age to go through this and I’m so sorry she has to experience all of this. I do wish her well.
ADD Once again, ignorance reigns. I’VE BEEN THROUGH IT. GOT IT??? I know what I went through so for those who gave the tumbs down, you are just showing pure ignorance.
all Chemotherapy treatments are different. The most common side effects are, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. The doctor will generally prescribe anti-nauseas. Also, She should not go on any diets, or try to loose weight on her own. best of luck!
It depends on the type of chemo she’s getting. Hair loss and nausea are common, and she will probably get tired. Did the oncologist explain which types of chemo drugs she’ll be taking, or what the side effects are? If not, he should have. If you can find out the types of chemo, check cancer.gov (The National Cancer Institute’s website). It will list common side effects. Don’t panic when you see the list of possible side effects. I have colon cancer, and although there are 1 1/2 pages of possible side effects, I only have two, and they’re not bad (my hands tingle when they get cold, and I get a little tired, but sleeping’s my favorite hobby anyway). I’m sure I’m not typical, though. Most chemo symptoms go away after treatment ends, or at least a few months later.
If she gets nausea, there are things they can do–there are several different types of anti-nausea medicines they can give her, even at the time she’s getting chemo. Tell her to take lots to do during treatment, like favorite books, trying her hand at crafts, things to keep her occupied and not thinking about it or feeling sorry for herself. She needs to keep her spirits up and remember that any side effects she’ll get are probably temporary, and it’s helping her permanently.
im sorry darling, my mum was diagnosed and they said it wasnt worth chemo , so the fact they are doing that is fantastic news, i understands your worry, noone can play god, be there for her and im sure with your support she will make a speedy recovery, i wish you guys well ,, good luck both my darlings xx
Oh I’m sorry to hear that, my daughter is 11 and went through chemo for 6 months this past year. If your sister wants a penpal contact me through my profile page.
Nausea and vomiting are common, but my daughter was really good with the anti-nausea pills they gave her. She was/is sad to lose her hair but she wears cool scarves and bandanas.
The one we weren’t expecting (although it was mentioned as a possible side effect and they had given us a laxative to take if needed) was constipation. One day she was fine (didn’t poop but felt fine) and the next day her stomach was killing her. She ended up having to go to emergency for an enema, it was horrible. After that I asked her every day how her poop was and if it wasn’t soft gave her the laxative. I know it’s not a fun conversation, but please ask her or tell your mom to.
All the best to you, I know it’s hard on the big sister too, I have an older daughter as well.
Lets cut to the chase Chemotherapy destroys your immune system, while it attacks the cancer celles it also attacks your good cells that’s why most people die of chemotherapy! The strong ones may survive temporally because Chemotherapy treats the disease NOT the cause. The roots of the cancer will still be in the body and will return in a few years even more aggressively.
These doctors only know of three options Chemo, radiation and surgery, non of which have been proven to have worked, yet they keep killing patients with these treatments.
If you love your sister GET THIS BOOK I AM RECOMMENDING TO YOU, IT’S THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU ARE EVER GOING TO GIVE HER!
What have you got to loose £10 – £11 ?
THERE ARE MANY CURES FOR CANCER AND THERE AND THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TO TESTIFY THAT THEY HAVE BEATEN CANCER.
To treat and cure cancer naturally you have to do 4 things:
1) Don’t listen to doctors who only give you three options, chemo, surgery or radio therapy – they do not know how cancer happens!! Yet they treat it with conventional treatments that have shown do not work, in fact they eventually kill the majority of the patients, most get rid of the tumours temporally and if the patient survives the process the cancer returns even more aggressively than before about five years later.
2) Switch of your TV as it is all biased disinformation.
3) Don’t buy newspapers (as above).
4) Do your own research on the web
Do you really believe that they had the technology in the 1960′s to land on the moon, yet since then with over 60 years of government funding (billions of pounds) plus millions in charity handouts, and thousands of scientists working on it………and they have not found a cure? Just how gullible are people?
More people make money out of cancer than people die of it, your sickness their profit.
The medical profession can make more money out of you using chemotherapy than offering comfort and support to cancer sufferers. There is no business like the cancer business. Truth about cancer cures are suppressed by the government, medical industry and the media.
You can judge for your self once you read this book, Id advice you to buy it straight away.
The book is called “Cancer, why we’re still dying to know the truth” by Philip Day (it’s not expensive).
Part of beating cancer is through proper nutrition including minerals and supplements as well as exercise.
Nutrition will include part raw vegetables, vitamin D, vitamin B17, Apricot kernels and many more important ways for curing cancer.
This is NOT a quack remedy as you might hear in the mainstream media, there are clinics in Mexico, Germany and South Africa that have over 85% success rates of curing cancer including those who have been sent home to die by the conventional medical practices.
BEFORE YOU CONDEM THE STRONG CLAIMS ABOVE, READ THE BOOK FIRST. Don’t miss this opportunity.
This wonderful man also has a web site with loads of information http://www.philipday.com
Good luck.
