What ever happened to the Avian(Bird) Flu?

Last year the Avian(Bird) Flu was all over the news and now its no longer mentioned. Does this mean we should no longer worry about it?

Best Answer: On the contrary...it's still very much a major health threat. And now that it has crossed over to infect humans...even more so. It is predicted to hit the U.S. by later this fall. My theory about why it's not all over the news is that they don't want to create widespread panic.

There just haven’t been any outbreaks recently. It’s still happening. Viruses have quiet periods sometimes, maybe due to it being summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

I agree with Rhubarb, its still going strong, last month they burned a whole farm in China I believe. It’s coming sooner or later and I don’t think we’re prepared.

Bird flu is still very active. Asia is still being sweeped by the virus and if you google news for the subject you will find daily events. For the moment however, migratory birds are not on the move. A resurgence of the disease is expected come fall, when large flocks of birds will be on the move again on their regular migratory paths. The virus has so far spread from Asia to large areas in Europe and Africa, however this fall might see it appear in the Western hemisphere as well.

At the moment Asian countries are still leading a battle against the disease. Vietnam has managed to avoid further serious outbreaks by agressively culling birds in the infected areas. This has worked, as the country has not had any human case this year. On the other hand, Indonesia’s death toll is rising rapidly. There have been 4 deaths there in the last two weeks alone (44 since the first case occurred). Apparently the country is unable to handle the situation. It was heavily hit by the tsunamis some time ago and the government claims it cannot afford to to compensate the farmers for the poultry it has to kill.

The thing we have to understand is that the issue concerns animals first and foremost. Containing the virus within the bird population will prevent it from spreading rapidly or developing into new forms which could ravish the human population as well.

Some claim the situation is exaggerated, however caution is to be exerted. Whether the great epidemic will or will not come, it’s good to be prepared. Check out some very useful information at this website: http://www.bird-flu-center.com
