What is a simple definition of cleft lip and cleft palate?

I know what they are so I’m not looking for a link with some huge explanation. I’m doing a poster on cleft lip and cleft palate and need to include a definition. The class will be taking notes and the definition I have “…are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation” is a little too complex.
Do you know a more simple way to describe it so the class will be able to understand easier?
