Where are autism rates the highest? Does autism have a link to too much iodine for young children?

I know there are studies saying that Iodine deficiency could lead to autism, but what about too much for children.

Best Answer: There has been much debate on the causes of autism but as of yet science is still limited in pinpointing a cause other than discussing genetics versus environmental causes (it is both). To answer your question on where it is prevalent, I have linked you to a graph that gives you data by state.

I have not heard of too much iodine causing problems other than rapid heart rate. Although, I have stumbled upon a toxic form of iodine once that is related to thyroid failure. I can’t remember how one gets this toxic form. I think it was from toxic waste from factories. I have not seen anything yet about too much iodine for children with autism, but lots of reports of them having too little. It appears that most people have too little as well. I will say that if you are planning on using iodine for treatment, it does have to be very carefully done since too much can be dangerous. I have not had anyone say they had a problem from taking too much, but they all say they use it cautiously since the medical literature says it can cause problems. Taking food forms of iodine is a safe way to go, like from seaweeds. There are lots of seaweed supplements that enhance iodine absorption, and have good amounts of iodine. I can’t remember all the names, but modifilan is one. You can ask around on the autism forums or google, and you will learn more about choices and cautions.

Last word I got was that Minnesota has the highest rates, followed by the New England area. The South, in general, has lower rates.

    Hello,

I never heard of iodine playing any role in the cause of Autism. However, I would agree with one of the comments that Autism is definitely caused by Environmental, Genetic and one they left out, traumatic brain Injury and/or brain injury.

My daughter was deprived of oxygen at birth and was recently diagnosed with autism, a particular overlapping diagnosis to developmental delay. In her case, we knew what caused her autism.

Environmental causes could range anywhere from pollution, chemicals, vaccinations (still arguable), and foods. Genetics would be simply a flaw in the genetic code of an individual with autism.

    Hope this helps.

I guess we all need to still remember, me included. That me or you ranting on, or chatting on the internet is not science. You can find real science here http://www.pubmed.gov. As still there is no evidences that vaccines, any component of vaccines or any vaccine schedule cause autism. Likewise, there is no science that establishes a correlation between gastric issues and autism. But Rett Syndrome is 100% genetic and is also a type of autism!.

Whenever autism is mentioned it seems someone wants to find a cure, it always amazes me how many lay people seem to KNOW the causes of autism, whether that be vaccinations, older fathers, mercury or whatever. Why these people have not been feted by the medical establishment and given the Nobel prize is a mystery to me. No, really.

But really maybe more money should go into supporting and raising awareness of asd and then maybe those of us on the autism spectrum could get on and enjoy our lives and not made to feel sub – human

People always want to find the worst affected child and put us all in the same boat, many on the autism spectrum have other conditions like brain defects that are not always the cause or autism itself. Most of us have co morbid and/or associated conditions on the autism spectrum which those of you not on the autism spectrum could have, but no one blames that on you being neuro typical….

I guess people will continue to question as there is no fact answers just like the universe we are a mystery, but we also include some of the best minds to date. I believe its genetic just my view after doing a few years of my own research and only do from the best like Cambridge University UK etc… and also traits of autism run through out my whole extended family to varying degrees…

I guess like any minority group we either have to stand up and speak for our selfs, conform which for myself I am far to neurologically different from you to do or hide away from main society, these days I prefer most of the time the last option.

Yes Iodine will cause your kids to have autism, now you feel bad for not taking heed of all the warnings
